What the TEAS test is for
The TEAS is an admissions test. Nursing and allied health programs use it to check that applicants have the reading, math, science and English skills the coursework assumes. It is owned and run by ATI, Assessment Technologies Institute, and the version in use is Version 7.
ATI lists no prerequisites for taking it. The decisions that matter are your school's: whether it accepts the TEAS, what score it wants, how many attempts it allows and how recent your score must be. Read your program's requirements before you register for anything.
The four sections
Each section has its own clock. Time left over in one does not carry into the next, so the exam is really four short tests taken back to back.
The question counts below include unscored pretest questions that ATI is trying out: 6 in Reading, 4 in Mathematics, 6 in Science and 4 in English and Language Usage. They are why 170 questions yield 150 scored ones.
ATI publishes question counts, not percentages. The weights in the outline table further down are each section's scored questions out of 150. How to prepare for each section is the subject of the separate study guide, linked at the end of this page.
- Reading: 45 questions in 55 minutes, 39 of them scored. Key ideas and details, craft and structure, and integration of knowledge and ideas.
- Mathematics: 38 questions in 57 minutes, 34 scored. Numbers and algebra, and measurement and data.
- Science: 50 questions in 60 minutes, 44 scored. Human anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, and scientific reasoning.
- English and Language Usage: 37 questions in 37 minutes, 33 scored. Conventions of standard English, knowledge of language, and using language and vocabulary to express ideas in writing.
Question types and the calculator
Most questions are multiple choice, but not all. ATI lists four other types: multiple select, where more than one option is correct; fill in the blank, where you type the answer; ordered response, where you put items in sequence; and hot spot, where you click a place on an image.
A calculator is built into the exam. You may not bring your own.
Four ways to take it
ATI offers the same exam through four routes. Your school may accept only some of them, so check before you book.
- Online with a remote ATI proctor, which ATI calls TEAS at ATI.
- Online with a remote proctor provided by a school.
- In person at a school.
- Through PSI, in person at a PSI testing center or remotely with a PSI proctor.
What it costs
$120 plus applicable sales tax when you register through ATI or PSI. When a school proctors the exam itself, the school sets its own price, which may differ.
Every retake is a new registration at full price. ATI's site is the authority on the current fee.
How it is scored
Your score is based on the 150 scored questions. There is no universal passing score: each school or program sets its own minimum, and how long a score stays valid is also the school's decision. The number to aim for is the one your program publishes.
ATI publishes no pass rate, which follows from the design: with no single passing score, there is nothing to pass or fail except a particular program's requirement.
Retakes
ATI itself requires no waiting period between attempts. Your school or program may: the number of attempts it accepts and any wait between them are its rules, not ATI's. Check them before your first attempt, because a program that limits attempts makes each one count for more.
What to bring
A physical, current, government-issued photo ID, in a name that matches your ATI account. Check the name on your account when you register, while there is still time to correct it.

The ATI TEAS exam: common questions
What is the TEAS test?
The ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills: an entrance exam that nursing and allied health programs use to assess applicants in reading, mathematics, science, and English and language usage. The current version is ATI TEAS Version 7.
How many questions are on the TEAS exam?
170. 150 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest questions spread across the four sections: 45 questions in Reading, 38 in Mathematics, 50 in Science and 37 in English and Language Usage.
How long is the TEAS test?
209 minutes of testing in four separately timed sections: 55 minutes for Reading, 57 for Mathematics, 60 for Science and 37 for English and Language Usage.
What is a passing score on the TEAS?
There is no universal passing score. Each school or program sets its own minimum, so the score to aim for is the one your program publishes.
How much does the TEAS exam cost?
$120 plus applicable sales tax through ATI or PSI. Schools that proctor the exam themselves set their own price, and every retake is charged in full.
Is the TEAS test hard?
Most of the content is material applicants have met before in school; the difficulty is the range and the clock. You move from reading passages to algebra to anatomy to grammar in one sitting, each section on its own timer, and English and Language Usage gives you one minute a question.
Can I use a calculator on the TEAS?
A calculator is built into the exam. Personal calculators are not allowed.
Can I take the TEAS exam at home?
Yes, if your school accepts it. ATI offers the exam online with a remote ATI proctor, and some schools proctor it remotely themselves. PSI also proctors it remotely. The in-person options are a school or a PSI testing center.
How many times can I take the TEAS?
ATI requires no waiting period between attempts. The number of attempts allowed and any wait between them are set by your school or program, and each retake is a new registration at full price.
Is the TEAS the same as the HESI?
No. The TEAS is ATI's exam, with four fixed sections. The HESI A2 is a different entrance exam from Elsevier, made up of subject exams that each school selects from. Your program tells you which one it accepts.
