NHA Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) Exam

CCMA Practice Test

This CCMA practice test is mapped to the current NHA test plan for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exam. The exam is 180 questions, 150 scored and 30 pretest, in 3 hours, and more than half of it, 84 of the 150 scored questions, is Clinical Patient Care. The free 25-question diagnostic shows your result in each of the seven domains.

The free CCMA diagnostic is being prepared and is not open yet. The exam facts and the content outline on this page are current.

The CCMA is a clinical exam with an administrative fringe, and its test plan shows it. Clinical Patient Care is 56% of the scored questions. The other six domains share the rest: Foundational Knowledge and Basic Science 10%, Patient Care Coordination and Education 8%, Administrative Assisting 8%, Communication and Customer Service 8%, Anatomy and Physiology about 5%, and Medical Law and Ethics about 5%.

Clinical Patient Care alone has 68 tasks in the test plan, in six parts: patient intake and vitals, general patient care, infection control and safety, point-of-care testing and laboratory procedures, phlebotomy, and EKG. Each practice question puts one task in front of a patient and asks what you do, with the reason for every option written out.

How to use the bank for the CCMA exam

  1. 1

    Take the diagnostic

25 questions weighted like the test plan, so about half of them are Clinical Patient Care.

  2. 2

Give clinical care the time its weight deserves

56% of the exam is one domain. Work it in tutor mode in sets small enough to read every explanation, and keep going until your misses are spread evenly rather than clustered on one kind of task.

  3. 3

    Sweep the small domains quickly

Each of the other six domains is between about 5% and 10%. They are worth learning, and quick to learn, but none of them should take the time that clinical care does.

  4. 4

    Sit a full-length mock

180 questions in 3 hours is exactly a minute a question. Do one complete timed sitting before the exam: after an unsuccessful attempt NHA makes you wait 30 days.

What is in the paid CCMA bank

  • The question bank

The CCMA bank is still being written. The live count appears here when questions are published.

  • Every option explained

A written reason for every option, right and wrong, plus a one-line takeaway, a cited reference and the outline task the question tests.

  • Tutor mode and timed mode

Tutor mode shows the explanation after each question. Timed mode holds everything back until the end, at exam pace.

  • A readiness band, by domain

Your first-attempt results weighted the way the exam weights its domains, shown as a band rather than a pass probability: nobody outside the exam owner knows the cut score.

  • A study plan

Set your exam date and the plan divides the questions you have not seen across the days you have left, weakest domains first, with the mock exams placed in the back half.

CCMA passes

A pass is access for a fixed number of days. You pay once; nothing renews.

How the questions are written and checked

  1. Step 1

    Written to the public outline

Each question is written by AI against one task in NHA's published content outline. Nothing is taken from the exam itself.

  2. Step 2

Solved blind by a second model

A different model answers the question without seeing the key. If it does not reach the same answer, the question is not published.

  3. Step 3

    Audited for flaws and duplicates

A separate pass looks for item-writing flaws: two defensible answers, a giveaway in the wording, a rationale that contradicts the key. Near-duplicates are removed.

  4. Step 4

    Corrected in public

Learners can report any question. Reports and answer statistics flag questions for withdrawal or correction, and every correction is logged.

There is no human subject-matter-expert review in that process, and we do not claim one. What you get instead is a cited reference on every question, so you can check it yourself. Read the full methodology or see the corrections log.

CCMA practice questions: common questions

How many questions are on the NHA CCMA exam?

180: 150 scored questions and 30 pretest questions that do not count. You have 3 hours.

What is on the CCMA exam?

Seven domains. Clinical Patient Care is the largest at 84 of the 150 scored questions. The others are Foundational Knowledge and Basic Science (15), Patient Care Coordination and Education (12), Administrative Assisting (12), Communication and Customer Service (12), Anatomy and Physiology (8), and Medical Law and Ethics (7).

Where can I take the CCMA exam?

At your school or training site, at a PSI test center, or online with live remote proctoring through PSI.

What is the passing score for the CCMA exam?

We could not confirm the current passing score on a page of NHA's that we read directly, so we do not quote one here. NHA's candidate handbook is the place to check.

How much does the CCMA exam cost?

NHA sets the fee, and we could not confirm the current figure directly from NHA's site, so we do not quote one. Check with NHA or with your school before you register.

How soon can I retake the CCMA exam?

After 30 days following a first or second unsuccessful attempt. After a third you must wait one year. Each attempt needs a new registration and the full exam fee.

Is the CCMA the same as the CMA?

No. The CCMA is NHA's certification. The CMA (AAMA) is a separate credential from the American Association of Medical Assistants, with its own exam and content outline. There is a separate question bank for it.

Is this CCMA practice test free?

The 25-question diagnostic is free and needs no account. The full bank and the mock exams are on a paid pass, charged once with no renewal.
