ASE Automobile & Light Truck Certification Tests (A1-A8)

ASE® A-Series Practice Test: A1 to A8

This independent ASE practice test covers the eight Automobile and Light Truck tests, A1 Engine Repair through A8 Engine Performance, in one pass. Each is a separate certification test of 50 to 60 questions, including 10 unscored questions, with its own time limit of 60 to 90 minutes. The free 25-question diagnostic samples all eight and needs no account.

The free ASE A-Series diagnostic is being prepared and is not open yet. The exam facts and the content outline on this page are current.

You do not take "the ASE test". You take the tests you choose, and each one is its own certification. The table below gives the length and time limit of each, and the outline shows what each one covers.

Within a test, ASE publishes how many questions come from each content area, and the spread is uneven. On A1 Engine Repair, 18 of the 45 scored questions are general engine diagnosis. On A2, 26 of 45 are transmission diagnosis. On both, diagnosis is the largest single area, and the questions here are written to match: a symptom, some test results, and a decision about the most likely cause.

The ASE A-Series exam at a glance

What you are preparing for, in the exam owner's own numbers.

Exam fee$62Per test. ASE also charges a $34 registration fee for each order.
DeliveryComputer-based, by appointment at a Prometric test center; first-time certification tests must be taken in person. Each test costs $62 plus a $34 registration fee per order, and a purchased test must be scheduled and taken within 90 days. Recertification can also be done by Prometric ProProctor remote testing or, for the A-series, the ASE Renewal App.
EligibilityAnyone may register and test, but certification is granted only once 2 years of full-time hands-on repair experience (or part-time equivalent) is documented. Formal training can stand in for up to 1 year, and certain OEM-sponsored co-op programs for the full 2 years.
Passing standardResults are reported as Pass or Fail for each test, with a score report emailed after the appointment. ASE's study guide and certification guide do not state a fixed passing percentage.
RetakesAfter a Pass or Fail result the candidate must wait 30 full days before buying and scheduling the same test again. Certification lasts five years and is kept by recertifying.

Who takes it

Working and aspiring automotive technicians. Anyone may register and sit a test, but ASE grants certification only once you have documented two years of full-time hands-on repair experience, or the part-time equivalent. Formal training can stand in for up to one year of that. Certification in A1 through A8 is what Master Automobile Technician status requires.

What the ASE A-Series exam covers

The eight tests are separate certifications, so ASE publishes no weighting between them; they are shown here as equal shares. Within each test, the content areas and their question counts are ASE's.

How to use the bank for the ASE A-Series exam

  1. 1

Pick your tests, then take the diagnostic

The 25-question diagnostic touches all eight tests. Read the result only for the tests you are about to sit.

  2. 2

Study one test at a time

Filter the bank to a single test, A5 Brakes for example, and work it in tutor mode. Each test is its own certification, so there is no benefit in mixing them until you are sitting several in one appointment.

  3. 3

Get used to the two-technician format

Many questions give two statements, one from Technician A and one from Technician B, and ask who is right: A, B, both or neither. Judge each statement on its own before you look at the options; the explanations take them one at a time.

  4. 4

    Time a full test

A1, A2 and A5 are 55 questions in 75 minutes; A3 and A4 are 50 in 60; A6 is 60 in 90; A7 and A8 are 60 in 75. After a result, pass or fail, ASE makes you wait 30 full days before buying the same test again.

What is in the paid ASE A-Series bank

  • The question bank

The ASE A-Series bank is still being written. The live count appears here when questions are published.

  • Every option explained

A written reason for every option, right and wrong, plus a one-line takeaway, a cited reference and the outline task the question tests.

  • Tutor mode and timed mode

Tutor mode shows the explanation after each question. Timed mode holds everything back until the end, at exam pace.

  • A readiness band, by domain

Your first-attempt results weighted the way the exam weights its domains, shown as a band rather than a pass probability: nobody outside the exam owner knows the cut score.

  • A study plan

Set your exam date and the plan divides the questions you have not seen across the days you have left, weakest domains first, with the mock exams placed in the back half.

How the questions are written and checked

  1. Step 1

    Written to the public outline

Each question is written by AI against one task in ASE's published content outline. Nothing is taken from the exam itself.

  2. Step 2

Solved blind by a second model

A different model answers the question without seeing the key. If it does not reach the same answer, the question is not published.

  3. Step 3

    Audited for flaws and duplicates

A separate pass looks for item-writing flaws: two defensible answers, a giveaway in the wording, a rationale that contradicts the key. Near-duplicates are removed.

  4. Step 4

    Corrected in public

Learners can report any question. Reports and answer statistics flag questions for withdrawal or correction, and every correction is logged.

There is no human subject-matter-expert review in that process, and we do not claim one. What you get instead is a cited reference on every question, so you can check it yourself. Read the full methodology or see the corrections log.

ASE A-Series practice questions: common questions

How many ASE tests are there in the automobile series?

This bank covers the eight that Master Automobile Technician status requires: A1 Engine Repair, A2 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, A3 Manual Drive Train and Axles, A4 Suspension and Steering, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A7 Heating and Air Conditioning, and A8 Engine Performance. ASE's study guide also includes A9 Light Vehicle Diesel Engines, which is not covered here.

How many questions are on an ASE test?

It depends on the test. A1, A2 and A5 have 55 questions, A3 and A4 have 50, and A6, A7 and A8 have 60. Each of those totals includes 10 unscored questions.

What score do I need to pass an ASE test?

ASE reports each test as pass or fail and emails a score report after the appointment. Its study guide and certification guide do not state a fixed passing percentage, so figures quoted elsewhere are not from ASE.

How much does an ASE test cost?

$62 for each test, plus a $34 registration fee per order. A purchased test must be scheduled and taken within 90 days.

Can I take the ASE test online?

First-time certification tests must be taken in person at a Prometric test center, by appointment. Recertification can also be done by remote testing.

How long is ASE certification good for?

Five years. It is kept by recertifying.

Is this ASE practice test free?

The 25-question diagnostic is free and needs no account. The full bank for all eight tests is one paid pass, charged once with no renewal.

Are these the questions on the ASE tests?

No. They are original questions written to the content areas ASE publishes in its study guide. They are not ASE test questions.
