ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exam

ServSafe® Manager Practice Test

This ServSafe Manager practice test follows the nine content areas ServSafe publishes for the Food Protection Manager exam. The exam is 90 questions in 2 hours: 80 are scored and 10 are pilot questions that do not count. ServSafe's current FAQ gives the passing score as 70%, which is at least 56 of the 80 scored questions. The free 25-question diagnostic needs no account.

The free ServSafe Manager diagnostic is being prepared and is not open yet. The exam facts and the content outline on this page are current.

ServSafe's 2026 content areas are organized around what a manager does, and the weights are worth knowing because they are uneven. Preparing Foods is the largest at 16 of the 80 scored questions, followed by Managing Establishment Facilities (12), Implementing Active Managerial Control (10) and Managing Personnel (9). Purchasing, Receiving, and Storing and Responding to Crises are the smallest, at 5 each. Most third-party material still describes older content areas.

This is an exam of specific facts applied to situations: a temperature, a time limit, a storage order, what to do when an employee reports an illness. The questions here put those facts in a kitchen and ask for the manager's decision, and each explanation gives the rule behind the right answer and the reason each of the others fails.

How to use the bank for the ServSafe Manager exam

  1. 1

    Take the diagnostic

25 questions spread over the nine content areas in the exam's proportions.

  2. 2

    Start with Preparing Foods

It is a fifth of the exam on its own. With Serving Foods and Purchasing, Receiving, and Storing it covers the path food takes through the operation, which is 29 of the 80 scored questions.

  3. 3

Learn each number with the situation it belongs to

Temperatures and times are easy to mix up when learned as a table. In tutor mode the explanation follows each question, while the food and the step are still in front of you.

  4. 4

    Take a timed mock

90 questions in 2 hours. You may take the exam twice within 30 days, but a third attempt means waiting 60 days, and each retest needs a new exam purchase.

What is in the paid ServSafe Manager bank

  • The question bank

The ServSafe Manager bank is still being written. The live count appears here when questions are published.

  • Every option explained

A written reason for every option, right and wrong, plus a one-line takeaway, a cited reference and the outline task the question tests.

  • Tutor mode and timed mode

Tutor mode shows the explanation after each question. Timed mode holds everything back until the end, at exam pace.

  • A readiness band, by domain

Your first-attempt results weighted the way the exam weights its domains, shown as a band rather than a pass probability: nobody outside the exam owner knows the cut score.

  • A study plan

Set your exam date and the plan divides the questions you have not seen across the days you have left, weakest domains first, with the mock exams placed in the back half.

How the questions are written and checked

  1. Step 1

    Written to the public outline

Each question is written by AI against one task in National Restaurant Association's published content outline. Nothing is taken from the exam itself.

  2. Step 2

Solved blind by a second model

A different model answers the question without seeing the key. If it does not reach the same answer, the question is not published.

  3. Step 3

    Audited for flaws and duplicates

A separate pass looks for item-writing flaws: two defensible answers, a giveaway in the wording, a rationale that contradicts the key. Near-duplicates are removed.

  4. Step 4

    Corrected in public

Learners can report any question. Reports and answer statistics flag questions for withdrawal or correction, and every correction is logged.

There is no human subject-matter-expert review in that process, and we do not claim one. What you get instead is a cited reference on every question, so you can check it yourself. Read the full methodology or see the corrections log.
