ASWB Social Work Licensing Examination – Clinical

The ASWB Exam: Clinical Category

The ASWB exam is the social work licensing examination owned and administered by the Association of Social Work Boards, and you take it once the social work board in your state or province has approved you. Since August 3, 2026 it is 122 multiple-choice questions (110 scored, 12 unscored) in 4 hours, taken at a Pearson test center as two separately timed sections of 61. It comes in several categories: this page gives the figures for the Clinical exam, which costs $260 per attempt, and the Masters exam has the same length and format.

One name, several exams

'The ASWB exam' is not one exam. ASWB runs its Social Work Licensing Examinations in several categories, each with its own content outline, and it is your board, not you and not ASWB, that decides which category you take. This site covers two of them.

The Clinical exam requires a master's degree in social work plus two years of experience in clinical settings, or the commensurate experience your jurisdiction defines. It is commonly the exam behind clinical licenses such as the LCSW, though license titles belong to the boards and differ from place to place.

The Masters exam is the category for master's-level practice and requires a master's degree in social work. It has the same number of questions, the same two-section format and the same time limit as the Clinical exam, with its own outline, its own weights and its own fee. It is covered on the LMSW exam page.

What changed on August 3, 2026

Three things, all at once. The exam got shorter: 122 questions in place of the earlier 170. The content outline was replaced with one based on ASWB's 2024 Analysis of the Practice of Social Work. And the sitting was split into two sections that are timed separately.

The practical effect is that preparation material written before August 2026 describes an exam that is no longer given: a different length, different content areas and a different way of moving through the questions. Some pages on ASWB's own site still carried pre-change wording when we checked; the 08/2026 ASWB Examination Guidebook is the document this page follows.

How the two sections work

Each section is 61 questions with 2 hours on its own clock, which is just under two minutes a question (about 118 seconds). Between the sections there is an optional scheduled break of up to 10 minutes.

The rule that changes how you take the exam is this: once you submit a section, it cannot be reopened. Review therefore has to be finished inside each section. Keep track of the questions you want to return to, leave time at the end of the first section to revisit them, and submit it knowing those answers are final.

The 12 unscored pretest questions are mixed in with the rest and are not identified. ASWB does not publish how they are divided between the two sections, so neither section can be treated as the one that matters less.

ASWB's guidebook says the exam may contain both three-option and four-option questions. It does not say in what proportion.

Getting to test day

You cannot simply sign up. The social work board in your state or province must first approve you, and that approval settles both your eligibility and your exam category. Requirements differ between jurisdictions, so the board's own site is the authority on what you need.

After approval the exam is taken in person, on a computer, at a Pearson test center. There are no fixed test dates: you book an individual appointment.

What the Clinical exam costs

$260 per attempt. The full fee is due again each time you test. ASWB's site is the authority for the current amount.

Why there is no single passing score

The result is pass or fail against a fixed passing standard. What moves is the number of correct answers that standard translates to, because exam forms are not identical. ASWB says the number needed generally ranges from 66 to 78 of the 110 scored questions, depending on the form. That is roughly 60% to 71%.

Two consequences follow. Nobody can tell you in advance the exact number you will need, because it depends on the form you are given. And the 12 pretest questions do not count at all, so the percentage of the whole exam you answered correctly is not the figure that decides the result.

If you do not pass

You must wait 90 days between attempts. If your score was within 10 correct answers of passing, you may ask for a waiver of the wait, provided your jurisdiction allows waivers.

The full exam fee is due for every attempt. Your board may need to approve you again, and some boards limit the number of attempts, so read your board's rules as well as ASWB's.

What the Clinical outline weighs

Three content areas: Values and Ethics at 36%, and Assessment and Planning and Intervention and Practice at 32% each. On 110 scored questions that is roughly 40, 35 and 35. Values and Ethics is the largest single area, which can surprise a candidate who thinks of the Clinical exam as a diagnosis and treatment exam.

What marks the outline as clinical is a short list of statements the Masters outline lacks: using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in assessment, treatment approaches for couples, role play, role modeling and assertiveness training, and research ethics. It also goes further into running services, with statements on program evaluation, quality assurance, organizational structure and fiscal management.

Weights are published for the three areas and not for the competencies inside them. The codes in the outline on this site (IA.1 and so on) were added by us so that each practice question can point to a statement; ASWB itself leaves the statements unnumbered.

Preparing for the 2026 format

Start by checking the date on anything you plan to study from. If it predates August 2026 it was written for the old outline. ASWB's guidebook lists its own references, including the NASW Code of Ethics and the DSM-5-TR, and those are the right primary sources.

Then practice the way the exam is now given: in blocks of the section's length, against the section's clock, finishing your review before you close the block. The questions in this bank mostly describe a situation and ask what the social worker should do first or next. The wrong options are usually reasonable actions taken at the wrong moment, so the skill to build is giving a reason for ruling each one out.

ASWB Clinical exam pass rate

2025 first-time test-takers: 75.7% (26,439 exams administered). This figure predates the exam format and content outline introduced on August 3, 2026.

This is ASWB's figure for first-time test-takers of the Clinical exam in 2025, when the exam was still the earlier 170-question exam with a different content outline. No pass-rate data for the format introduced on August 3, 2026 has been published yet. It describes first-time test-takers as a group, not any one candidate and not the people who use this site.

The ASWB Clinical exam: common questions

How long is the ASWB exam?

4 hours in total: two sections of 2 hours each, with an optional break of up to 10 minutes between them.

How much does the ASWB Clinical exam cost?

$260 per attempt, and the full fee is charged again for a retake. The Masters exam has a different fee.

They are separate categories with separate content outlines and weights.
